Self Storage Packing and Moving Tips
Here are some things to consider while planning your move.
Mini Storage & Van Rentals
- Make a list – Keep inventory of all of your items. Not only is this needed for
insurance purposes, it helps you keep track and locate your items when needed.
- Label your boxes – be sure to label all sides of your boxes with what room the contents of the box belong, and notable items within the box.
- Visit the mini storage facility or van rental – verify that you have enough storage space before you move in. This also goes for your van. You don’t want to fill up your moving truck only to be left with a few remaining items that you don’t have room for. It’s a lot better to have spare space than not enough space.
- Read the lease – be sure to be aware of van return dates, and fuel policy, as well as monthly charges, security policy, and access for your mini storage unit.
- Leave an isle – leave space for you to access boxes and items in the rear of your storage unit.
- Check in – Check your unit periodically.
- Purchase Insurance – you never know when accidents are going to happen during your move.
Packing Tips
- Disassemble items – some furniture and materials can be broken down into smaller pieces. By disassembling these items, you save room and maximize available storage space. Be sure to place components such as screws into marked bags separate from other components.
- Clean – clean items that may attract bugs such as dishes and food, and leave appliances ajar to prevent mildew and odor buildup.
- Prevent rust – prevent rust by draining all appliances, tools and equipment before storing. Also, apply oil to these areas for additional protection.
- Mirrors & Paintings – store mirrors and paintings on their side rather than flat. This can help prevent breakage and smashing.
- Wrapping – plastic can retain moisture so don’t use it to wrap items that can be damaged by moisture. Newspaper can also rub off and damage particular items. Tape wrapping to secure it to the item being wrapped. This prevents the wrapping from unraveling.
